Free Dementia Friends Information Session

Over 1 million people have become Dementia Friends. Why not join them at the Dementia Friends Information Session at the Norfolk Royale Hotel in Bournemouth on 21st September 3.15-3.45pm.

You can help tackle the stigma and lack of understanding around dementia by becoming a Dementia Friend.

Aimee Packwood told us more, "We are attending all the political party conferences this year, so I am going to be in Bournemouth for the Liberal Democrat party conference; come along to find out about some of the key things we think everyone should know about Dementia, and how you can make a difference for people living with Dementia in your everyday life. The session is free, and we won’t be asking for any ongoing commitment, and it’s not about fundraising, just a chance to find out more."

'Give It A Go' Cycling in Bournemouth

Residents in Bournemouth are being encouraged to ‘Give It A Go’ and get cycling this summer.

The Council has been investing in making cycling easier, safer and more attractive in a bid to encourage more people to make short trips by bike. Infrastructure improvements over the past three years have seen 8,000 metres of new cycling routes around the town, bringing the town’s total to 80KM. From peaceful traffic-free tracks to safe routes along busy commuter roads there is bound to be something to suit everyone.

Tea Dance at Kinson Community Centre

BSO Boost hosts Tea Dances across the region which are very popular community events. These bring together not just couples who enjoy dancing, but also gives those who are isolated the opportunity to make new friends with the bonus of being able to dance with like-minded people.

Music and dance is a very powerful tool for those who are in residential or care homes. Groups are bussed to the venue and encouraged to do some movement to the music. Even those in wheelchairs can join in, gaining some gentle exercise and enjoying the social atmosphere. All have a wonderful time; the sparkle is bought back into their eyes.

Members of the Carers Group at Lewis-Manning Hospice have been celebrating National Carers Week, which aims to recognise and highlight the contribution of all of the UK’s 6.5 million unpaid carers.

The charity, which offers free palliative care to local people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, has provided carers support for a long time at the hospice and when the new building was opened in 2012, Dr Simon Pennell, the hospice GP and Terry Purnell, who has worked with carers for over ten years, worked out a new plan and set-up a new group which now meets weekly.

The Dorset Blind Association is the essential source of support for many blind and partially sighted people in the county. But while demand for help keeps increasing, the end of a Big Lottery grant and a huge drop in other vital sources of funding means the charity’s ability to keep providing that help is in jeopardy.

Wallisdown Road Closed

It's not often you get to stand in the middle of Wallisdown road to take a photograph and not be taking your life in your own hands. But essential maintenance currently under way in Wallisdown means the busy road is closed to traffic.

Unsurprisingly the local shops were quieter than usual.

The road between Canford Road and Kinson Road is closed from Tuesday 14th October for up to 5 days whilst Sembcorp (Bournemouth Water) carry out urgent works.  For more information please contact Sembcorp on 01202 591111.

Targeted youth work to support young people

Plans to modernise youth services in order to target the most vulnerable young people in Bournemouth have been agreed.

Papers that came before the Cabinet meeting on 11 September) outlined three areas that the Council’s integrated youth service will focus on.

The first of these is easier access to information and guidance and intervention at an early stage.

Have you, or a family member, used the non-emergency patient transport service in the last 6 months in Poole; Bournemouth or Dorset?
